Every ALKA rental in Dubai includes collision damage waiver (CDW), third-party liability and personal accident cover, together with 24/7 roadside assistance, and full cover is available as an optional upgrade. The exact cover, the insured value and the excess depend on the vehicle class and are stated in your booking confirmation. This guide explains what each part means, where cover stops and how the security deposit sits alongside it.
What is included with every rental
Every vehicle is insured in accordance with UAE law. Whether you are considering a supercar, a luxury SUV or an executive sedan, the rental includes the same building blocks:
- Collision damage waiver (CDW): in broad terms, this deals with damage to the rental car itself, with you paying the excess, which is the amount you pay towards each claim.
- Third-party liability: cover for damage or injury caused to other people and their property.
- Personal accident cover: cover relating to injury to the people travelling in the car.
- 24/7 roadside assistance for mechanical breakdown.
Roadside assistance is there for genuine breakdowns. Help needed because of misuse, misfuelling, a lost key, a flat battery caused by leaving equipment on, or a puncture is chargeable.
Why cover depends on the vehicle class
Insurance at ALKA is class-based. The cover, the insured value and the excess are set for each vehicle class, so the figures for a supercar can differ from those for a luxury SUV or an executive sedan. All three are stated in your booking confirmation, and the excess is also set out in the rate sheet in force when you book, so you can see them in writing before the car is handed over.
If you would like more protection, full cover is an optional upgrade. Separately, where it is offered, an excess reduction option can be purchased before handover. Because that option has to be arranged before the car is delivered, it is worth asking early which choices apply to the class you have in mind.
What insurance does not cover
Cover has limits, and they are written into section 9 of our rental terms. You remain fully liable for loss or damage arising from:
- driving by an unnamed or unqualified driver
- driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- taking the car outside the UAE, including into Oman, or off paved public roads onto sand, beaches or unpaved tracks
- prohibited use, such as racing, track days, drifting or subletting the car
- wilful damage or gross negligence
- leaving the vehicle unlocked or with the keys in it
- loss of keys or documents
- damage to tyres, wheels, glass, undercarriage or interior, where the policy excludes it
- any incident not reported to the police where a police report is required
Misfuelling is not covered either. Using the wrong fuel type or charging standard leaves you responsible for the full cost of recovery and repair, so it is worth checking the fuel type at handover.
Three rules that keep your cover valid
Named drivers only. The insurance is issued in the named driver's name, so only drivers named in the rental agreement may drive. An additional driver can be added for a fee, but must present the same documents as the main driver and be added to the policy at the start of the rental; a driver cannot be added once the rental has begun.
Stay within the UAE. Insurance cover ends at the UAE border, and cross-border travel, including into Oman, is not permitted. Our guide to driving a rental car from Dubai to Oman explains how to plan around it.
Always get a police report. After an accident, do not move the vehicle, call 999 and obtain a police report: without one, the insurance cover does not apply. Do not admit liability, agree a settlement or authorise a repair without our written consent. The full routine is in our guide on what to do after an accident in a Dubai rental car.
Licences issued less than six months ago
A recent licence changes the insurance picture, so share your licence issue date when you book. For a licence under six months old, the insurer reduces cover: after an at-fault accident, the driver carries the excess and 10 per cent of the assessed claim, and a Dubai Police report is needed whatever the circumstances. Your booking confirmation repeats this when it applies to you, and certain vehicle classes are not available to newly licensed drivers.
How the security deposit relates to insurance
Insurance and the security deposit do different jobs. The deposit is a pre-authorisation hold on your card, its amount depends on the vehicle class, and it secures RTA and traffic fines, tolls, theft and damage that insurance does not cover.
The deposit is security, not a ceiling. Where insurance does not apply, you remain fully liable for the loss, and amounts beyond the deposit can still be recovered from you. Our guide to the car rental security deposit in Dubai explains how the hold works and when your bank releases it.
Insurance is far easier to understand before a trip than after an incident. If you would like the cover, the excess and the upgrade options for a particular vehicle class confirmed before you travel, send your dates to our concierge through the contact page or at reservations@alkarentacar.com, and we will walk you through it.
Quick answers
Does an ALKA rental in Dubai include insurance?
Yes. Collision damage waiver, third-party liability and personal accident cover are included, with 24/7 roadside assistance, and full cover is an optional upgrade.
Is the insurance excess the same for every car?
No. Insurance is class-based: the cover, the insured value and the excess depend on the vehicle class and are stated in your booking confirmation.
Can someone else drive my rental car?
Only drivers named in the rental agreement may drive. An additional driver must be added to the policy at the start of the rental, and letting an unnamed person drive voids the insurance cover and makes the renter liable for all resulting loss.
Does the insurance cover tyres and glass?
Not necessarily. The rental terms exclude damage to tyres, wheels, glass, undercarriage or interior where the policy excludes it, so ask our concierge what applies to your vehicle class before you travel.
Is the security deposit the same as insurance?
No. The deposit is a card pre-authorisation hold that secures fines, tolls, theft and damage that insurance does not cover. It sits alongside the included insurance rather than replacing it.
