How to Check a Dubai Car Rental Company Before You Pay
A general checklist for judging a Dubai rental company before money moves: who the company is, how the deposit is held, what the insurance excludes, and which terms belong in writing.

Short answer
Before you pay a Dubai rental company, get six things in writing: the legal company and its licence, who supplies the car, how the deposit is held and released, what the insurance excludes, the cancellation terms, and the document and age rules. Anything that is only a spoken promise should be in writing before money moves.
Most ALKA clients arrange their Dubai rental from outside the United Arab Emirates, before they land, so money and documents move before anyone has seen the car. The checklist below works with any company, and each point also shows what ALKA's published conditions say and where they are written.
What should you check before you pay?
Nine points cover almost everything that turns into an argument later.
| What to check | ALKA's written position | Where it is written |
|---|---|---|
| Contracting company | ALKA Investment - FZCO, trading as ALKA Rent A Car, with trade licence and registered address | Rental terms, section 1 |
| Who supplies the car | Own fleet or a licensed partner fleet operator, identified in the booking confirmation | About page; rental terms, section 1 |
| How the deposit is taken | A pre-authorisation hold on the renter's card; the funds stay with your bank | Rental terms, section 4 |
| When the deposit is released | Card hold up to 21 days, then released by your bank; cash deposit refunded within 30 days | Rental terms, section 4 |
| Insurance included | Collision damage waiver, third-party liability, personal accident cover, 24/7 roadside assistance; full cover optional | FAQ; rental terms, sections 9 and 10 |
| Insurance exclusions | Published, including unnamed drivers, prohibited and off-road use, and any incident without a required police report | Rental terms, sections 7 to 9 |
| What the price covers | Minimum 2 days, 250 km per day, full to full fuel, 5 per cent VAT shown on the invoice | Rental terms, sections 3 to 6 |
| Cancellation and refunds | At least 24 hours before the agreed pickup time; eligible refunds normally in 7 to 10 business days | Rental terms, section 13 |
| Documents and age | Three licence tiers; minimum age 23, higher for certain vehicle classes | Rental terms, section 2 |
Is the company identified by legal name, licence and address?
A trading name on its own tells you little. The company behind it should be named in full, with its trade licence and registered address, in the same place as its conditions. ALKA's terms name ALKA Investment - FZCO, trading as ALKA Rent A Car, state its IFZA trade licence number, and give its registered address at IFZA Business Park, DDP A2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai. The legal name on the website, on the rental agreement and on the invoice should be the same entity; if a payment request carries a different name, ask why in writing before transferring anything.
Who actually supplies the car?
A rental can be arranged by one company and delivered by another, so it is worth knowing which entity is which before you pay. ALKA states its model openly: vehicles come from its own fleet and from licensed partner fleet operators in the United Arab Emirates, every vehicle is insured in accordance with UAE law, and the booking confirmation identifies the operator that supplies your vehicle. Where a partner operator supplies the car, ALKA's published conditions apply to that rental in the same way.
Is the deposit a hold on your card, or money taken from you?
A deposit taken as a card pre-authorisation stays with your own bank and is not transferred to the company unless a charge is later made against it. A deposit taken as a payment, by bank transfer or in cash, leaves your control.
On an ALKA rental the deposit is a pre-authorisation hold taken before handover. The amount depends on the vehicle class and is stated in the booking confirmation, and the funds stay with your bank. It secures traffic and RTA fines, damage that insurance does not cover, and theft. A card hold is kept for up to 21 days and is then released by your bank, which controls the timing; a cash deposit is refunded within 30 days, with any transfer charge borne by the customer. Our guide to the car rental security deposit in Dubai covers it in detail.
Does the written insurance say what it excludes?
Every ALKA vehicle is insured in accordance with UAE law, so fully insured on its own says almost nothing. What matters is the excess you pay towards each claim and the situations where cover does not apply at all.
ALKA rentals include collision damage waiver, third-party liability and personal accident cover with 24/7 roadside assistance, and full cover is an optional upgrade; the insured value and the excess depend on the vehicle class and are stated in the booking confirmation. The exclusions are published too: driving by a person not named on the agreement, driving under the influence, off-road and other prohibited use, and any incident where a required police report was not obtained. In the UAE a claim rests on that report, which is why calling 999 comes first. Our guide to car rental insurance in Dubai explains each part of the cover.
Are the cancellation and pricing terms written down before you pay?
Cancellation terms belong in front of the payment. ALKA's published position is that cancellation must reach the company at least 24 hours before the agreed pickup time, and that eligible refunds go back to the original payment method, normally within 7 to 10 business days. Terms can also depend on the vehicle class and, where a partner operator supplies the vehicle, on that operator's terms. Pricing deserves the same treatment, so check what sits outside the quote:
- Minimum rental 2 days, and a rental day is 24 hours from handover.
- 250 km per day is included over the whole rental; extra kilometres are charged at the rate for the vehicle class.
- Fuel is full to full, and UAE VAT of 5 per cent is shown on the invoice.
- Salik tolls are charged at the actual amount levied for each crossing, and fines at the amount levied plus an administrative fee stated in the booking confirmation.
- Delivery and collection in Dubai are complimentary; other emirates may carry a fee, and an airport return carries a minimum drop-off fee.
The practical version of all of this is collected on our FAQ page.
Do the document and age rules match your situation?
A company that asks for the wrong documents can turn you away at handover, after you have flown. The requirement depends on where your licence was issued: UAE residents present an Emirates ID, a UAE driving licence and a residence visa; visitors with a GCC licence may drive on it, with no International Driving Permit required; visitors from everywhere else present their home-country licence with a valid International Driving Permit, plus a passport and entry visa or stamp.
Three further rules are worth confirming before payment. The minimum age is 23, some vehicle classes require a higher minimum, and drivers under 23 are accepted only by prior written agreement and against an additional charge. If a licence was issued less than six months before the rental, insurance cover may be reduced, so declare the issue date when you book. An additional driver must be added to the policy at the start of the rental and cannot be added later, and the payment card must be in the renter's own name. Our guide to the documents you need to rent a car in Dubai sets out each tier.
Are you paying through the company's own channels?
Find the website yourself rather than following a link from a message, and check that the address you are corresponding with sits on the same domain as the conditions you have read. ALKA's canonical domain is alkarentacar.com, with reservations at reservations@alkarentacar.com and partnership enquiries at business@alkarentacar.com; alkarent.com redirects permanently to the canonical domain. Treat a payment link arriving from another domain as unverified until you confirm it through the channel you found yourself.
What should you ask before you transfer money?
If you send one message before paying, send this one.
- Which legal entity am I contracting with, and which operator supplies the car?
- Is the deposit a card pre-authorisation or a payment, and when is it released?
- What excess applies to this vehicle class, and what does the insurance exclude?
- What is the cancellation deadline, and how is an eligible refund paid back?
- What does the quote include, and what is billed separately?
- Which documents are checked at handover, and what minimum age applies to this class?
- Will the handover and return inspections be documented with photographs and signed by both sides?
On an ALKA rental that last point is part of the process: the condition of the car and the odometer reading are recorded at handover and at return, and the report is signed by both sides. The full conditions are published in the rental terms. To have them applied to your own dates, send them through the contact page. The online vehicle catalogue is temporarily offline while the fleet is updated, so availability is confirmed on request.
Quick answers
How can I tell whether a Dubai car rental company is legitimate?
Check that it names the legal entity, its trade licence and its registered address alongside its published conditions, that the booking confirmation identifies who supplies the vehicle, and that the deposit, insurance, cancellation and document rules are written down before you pay. ALKA publishes these in its rental terms and on its FAQ page.
Should a car rental deposit in Dubai be a card hold or a payment?
On an ALKA rental the deposit is a pre-authorisation hold taken on the renter's own card before handover, so the funds stay with your bank unless a charge is later made against them. A card hold is kept for up to 21 days and is then released by your bank; a cash deposit is refunded within 30 days, with any transfer charge borne by the customer.
What should I ask about rental car insurance before I pay?
Ask what is included, what excess applies to the vehicle class you are renting, and what the policy excludes. ALKA rentals include collision damage waiver, third-party liability and personal accident cover with 24/7 roadside assistance, with full cover as an optional upgrade; the exclusions, including driving by a person not named on the agreement and incidents where a required police report was not obtained, are published in the rental terms.
What are ALKA's official channels?
The canonical website is alkarentacar.com, reservations are handled at reservations@alkarentacar.com and partnership enquiries at business@alkarentacar.com. The domain alkarent.com redirects permanently to the canonical site, where the privacy policy, terms of use and rental conditions are published.
Do the terms change if a partner fleet supplies the car?
The operator that supplies the vehicle is identified in your booking confirmation, and ALKA's published conditions apply to that rental in the same way. Where a partner operator's own terms add something, for example on cancellation or a no-show, that is shown before you pay and repeated in the booking confirmation.
