Car Rental Security Deposit in Dubai, Explained
The deposit on an ALKA rental is a card hold, not a charge. What it covers, how the amount is set and when your bank releases it.

At ALKA Rent A Car, the security deposit on a Dubai rental is a pre-authorisation hold on your card, not a charge: the funds stay with your bank unless an amount later becomes due. The bank normally releases the hold within 21 days of the car being returned and inspected, and deposits paid in cash are returned within 30 days. This guide explains what the deposit is for, how the amount is set and what can reduce it, so the end of your trip is as calm as the beginning.
A hold on your card, not a payment
The deposit is placed as a pre-authorisation hold on your card before the car is handed over. Your bank reserves the amount, but nothing is transferred to us unless we later charge against it for something the rental terms allow. The deposit is also separate from the rental charge, which is payable before handover unless your booking confirmation states otherwise; both amounts are set out in your booking confirmation.
Because most of our clients book from outside the UAE, this step happens remotely. Once your identity documents have been verified online, you pay and the deposit is held as a card pre-authorisation, with no visit to an office. A credit card is the standard requirement, and the card must be in the renter's own name. For long-term rentals or repeat clients, alternative arrangements can be discussed with our concierge.
What the security deposit covers
The deposit secures costs that can arise during a rental but are not part of the rental price. Under our published terms it covers:
- Traffic and RTA fines incurred during the rental
- Salik road tolls, charged at the actual amount per crossing
- Damage that insurance does not cover
- Theft of the vehicle
When the car comes back, the release is also subject to any deduction for fuel, excess mileage or other amounts properly due. Rentals are full to full, and 250 km per day is included, with additional kilometres billed at the rate in your rental agreement.
Insurance and the deposit do different jobs. Collision damage waiver, third-party liability and personal accident cover are included, with 24/7 roadside assistance, and full cover is available as an optional upgrade. The deposit is there for what falls outside that cover, which is why the insurance conditions described below matter.
How the deposit amount is set
There is no single deposit figure for every car. The amount depends on the vehicle class, so the deposit for a supercar can differ from that for a luxury SUV or an executive sedan. It is confirmed at reservation and stated in your booking confirmation, so you know the exact figure for your rental.
The amount can change during a rental in a few specific cases. A further hold may be taken, or the deposit increased, if you extend the rental, if an incident occurs, or if fines or tolls are outstanding. Extending a rental also requires a valid deposit hold, and a booking may be cancelled if the deposit cannot be secured.
When your deposit is released
The hold is released after the car has been returned and inspected. A card hold is kept for up to 21 days and is then released by your bank; the exact timing is controlled by the bank rather than by us. Deposits paid in cash are refunded within 30 days of return, and any bank transfer charge is borne by the renter.
If anything is deducted, we tell you what we are charging and why, with supporting evidence. The handover inspection is documented with photographs and signed by both sides, and the odometer reading is recorded at handover and again at return, so there is a clear record to compare against.
Fines are passed on after confirmation with Dubai Police and the RTA. Our guide to Salik tolls and traffic fines explains how each is handled.
How to keep your full deposit
Several common deductions can be avoided. A few habits make the difference:
- Return the car with a full tank, as it was delivered.
- Keep the mileage allowance in mind if you plan long drives between emirates: 250 km per day, calculated over the whole rental period.
- Stay within the UAE. Cross-border travel, including into Oman, is not permitted, and insurance cover ends at the border.
- Let only the drivers named on the rental agreement drive. An additional driver must be added to the policy at the start of the rental.
- After an accident, do not move the vehicle, call 999 and obtain a police report. Without a police report, the insurance cover does not apply.
- Look through the handover photographs and report before you drive away.
The full conditions, including what insurance excludes, are set out in our rental terms.
