How Salik tolls are billed
Salik is Dubai's electronic road toll system. There are no booths and nothing to pay at the roadside: a crossing is recorded automatically when the car passes through a toll gate.
ALKA then bills each crossing made during your rental at the actual amount levied by the authority. Under the rental terms, tolls are among the items charged during or after the rental as they arise, together with fuel, mileage beyond the included allowance and similar extras.
How traffic fines are passed on
Under the rental terms, you are responsible for every traffic fine, parking fine, impound charge and toll incurred during your rental period, as well as any charge an authority imposes in connection with the vehicle while it is in your possession.
Each fine is identified, evidenced and settled with Dubai Police or the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and it is passed on to you after that confirmation. You pay the amount the authority levied, plus an administrative handling fee.
Two further points are worth knowing. Black points and any driving ban remain the responsibility of the driver. And where an authority requires the identity of the person driving the vehicle at a given time, ALKA is obliged to provide it.
What the administrative handling fee covers
The handling fee pays for the manual work behind each fine: identifying it, gathering the evidence and settling it with Dubai Police or the RTA. It is not a fixed published figure. The amount is set per rental, confirmed at reservation and stated in your booking confirmation. If you would like it confirmed while you are still planning, simply ask when you enquire.
Why a fine can arrive after you return the car
Fines are often notified weeks or months after a rental ends, so a smooth return does not always mean every charge is settled. When a fine from your rental period is notified, ALKA charges the payment card registered on your booking and sends you the evidence for that charge. The rental terms commit to telling you what is being charged and why, with supporting evidence, before or at the time of charging.
How your security deposit relates to tolls and fines
The security deposit covers RTA fines, tolls, theft and damage not covered by insurance. Paid by credit card, it is a pre-authorisation hold rather than a charge, and the bank normally releases it within 21 days of return and inspection. Cash deposits are returned within 30 days, with any transfer fee borne by the renter.

Practical ways to avoid fines
A few everyday habits make fines far less likely:
- Watch the posted speed limit on every road and adjust as it changes. Dubai's roads are widely monitored by cameras, and limits can differ from one stretch to the next.
- Park only in marked bays and pay for parking wherever it is required. Parking fines and impound charges from your rental period are your responsibility too.
- Keep your phone in a hands-free mount, and make sure everyone in the car wears a seatbelt.
- Let only the drivers named on the rental agreement drive. An additional driver must be added to the insurance policy at the start of the rental.
