Returning a Rental Car in Dubai: Inspection, Fuel, Deposit

Returning an ALKA rental car in Dubai is straightforward: the car is inspected, the odometer reading is recorded, and it should come back with a full tank, as it was delivered. Your card deposit hold is then normally released by your bank within 21 days of return and inspection, and deposits paid in cash are returned within 30 days.

What happens at the return inspection

When the car comes back, it is inspected before the deposit is released. The odometer reading is recorded at handover and again at return, and both readings appear in the handover reports that you sign. The inspection at delivery was documented with photographs and signed by both sides, so there is a clear record to compare against.

The rental terms ask for the car to be returned in the same condition as at handover, fair wear and tear excepted, together with all keys, documents, accessories and equipment. Missing or damaged accessories are charged at the replacement cost shown in your booking confirmation. Cleaning charges apply where the car needs more than normal valeting, for example because of smoke, animal hair, sand, spillage or odour, and the applicable charge is also shown in your booking confirmation.

Allow reasonable, unhurried time for this step, and read the report before you sign it. If you like to keep your own record, a few photographs of the car at return sit well alongside the signed report.

Fuel and mileage at return

Rentals are full to full. The car is delivered with a full tank, or a full charge where the car is electric, and should be returned the same way. If it is not, the car is refuelled or recharged and you are charged the cost plus the service fee shown in your booking confirmation.

Mileage is calculated at return from the two odometer readings. 250 km per day is included, calculated over the whole rental period, and kilometres beyond the allowance are charged at the rate for the vehicle class stated in your booking confirmation. Where and when to return the car

Collection is complimentary anywhere in Dubai, so the car can be collected from your hotel or residence. A return to a different address in Dubai can be arranged, and airport returns carry a minimum drop-off fee that is confirmed before the rental starts. In other emirates a fee may apply, so mention it to the concierge when you arrange the return.

Timing matters as much as place. The car is returned at the agreed time, to the agreed place. A late return without agreement is charged for the additional time at the rate in your booking confirmation, and you remain responsible for the car until it is returned. Returning early does not reduce the charge: the period already booked remains payable unless your booking confirmation states otherwise.

When your security deposit is released

The deposit is a pre-authorisation hold on your card, not a charge. After return and inspection, the hold is released subject to any deduction for fuel, mileage, damage, fines, tolls or other amounts due. A card hold is kept for up to 21 days and is then released by your bank, which controls the exact timing. Cash deposits are refunded within 30 days of return, and any bank transfer charge is borne by the renter.

Tolls and fines that arrive later

A smooth return does not always close every item. Salik tolls are billed at the actual cost of each crossing, and traffic fines are often notified weeks or months after a rental ends. Once a fine from your rental period is notified and confirmed with Dubai Police or the RTA, it is charged to the card registered on your booking at the amount levied plus the administrative fee stated in your booking confirmation, and you receive the evidence for each charge. A checklist before you hand back the keys

• Fill the tank, so the car comes back full, as it was delivered.
• Check the odometer against the allowance of 250 km per day over the whole rental.
• Gather every key, document, accessory and piece of equipment that came with the car.
• Remove your belongings. Property found after return is held for a reasonable period and then disposed of.
• Leave the interior needing no more than normal valeting; smoke, sand, spillage or odour can lead to a cleaning charge.
• Confirm the return time and address with the concierge, especially for an airport return or a different address.
• Read the return report, including the odometer reading, before you sign it.
• Keep the card registered on your booking active for any fines notified later.
