Can You Drive a Rental Car in the Desert in Dubai?
An ALKA rental car is for paved public roads within the UAE. Here is what the rental terms rule out, from dunes and beaches to track days and towing, what a breach costs, and how to plan a desert experience without the car.

Short answer
No. Under ALKA's rental terms the car may be driven only on paved public roads within the UAE: sand, including dunes, beaches, sabkha, salt flats, unpaved tracks and flooded roads are prohibited, as are racing, track days and drifting. A breach voids the insurance cover and leaves you liable for the full value of any loss or damage.
Dubai sits between the sea and the dunes, and a fast car invites ideas: a run onto the sand, a stop on the beach, a few laps somewhere closed to traffic. Under ALKA's rental terms, none of those is a use the car is rented for. The vehicle may be driven only on paved public roads within the United Arab Emirates, and the terms list the prohibited uses and what a breach costs. This guide sets both out, explains what remains allowed, and shows how to plan a desert experience without the rental car.
Where can you drive an ALKA rental car?
Section 7 of our rental terms answers this in one sentence: the vehicle may be driven only on paved public roads within the United Arab Emirates. That covers every emirate, so a day in Abu Dhabi or a longer run up the coast to Ras Al Khaimah is within the terms, provided the car stays on the road. Taking the vehicle outside the UAE, including into the Sultanate of Oman, is strictly prohibited and is not covered by insurance; our guide on driving a rental car from Dubai to Oman explains that rule and how to plan around it. The same section rules out moving the car by sea, air or transporter without our written consent.
Can you take a rental car onto sand, dunes or a beach?
No. Off-road use is prohibited under the rental terms, and the list is specific. The car may not be driven on:
- sand, which includes dunes, however short the detour from the road
- beaches
- sabkha and salt flats
- unpaved tracks, whatever their destination
- flooded roads, even where the road beneath the water is paved
The list is not a judgement about how capable the car is. A luxury SUV is bound by the same section as a supercar, because the rule follows the insurance and the rental agreement, not the drivetrain. Sand also has a second cost: section 8 allows cleaning charges where the vehicle comes back in a condition that needs more than normal valeting, and sand is named alongside smoke, animal hair, spillage and odour. The charge is stated in your booking confirmation. Our guide on returning a rental car in Dubai covers the return inspection, where that condition is recorded.
Can you use a rental car for a track day or drifting?
No. Section 8 of the rental terms prohibits using the vehicle for racing, rallying, track days, speed testing, drifting, stunts or any competitive event. The wording is wide: an organised track session and an informal test of top speed on an empty road are treated the same way, and so is a drift in a car park. Insurance cover does not apply to loss arising from prohibited use, and we are entitled to end the rental immediately and recover the car. If a day on a circuit is part of your plans, arrange it as a separate activity with its own vehicle.
What else do the rental terms prohibit?
Terrain and motorsport are the headline cases, but sections 7 and 8 cover other uses too, collected below.
| Use | Allowed on an ALKA rental? | Where it is written |
|---|---|---|
| Paved public roads anywhere in the UAE, including Abu Dhabi | Yes | Rental terms, section 7 |
| Sand, beaches, sabkha, salt flats, unpaved tracks or flooded roads | No | Rental terms, section 7 |
| Taking the vehicle outside the UAE, including into Oman | No; not covered by insurance | Rental terms, section 7 |
| Transport by sea, air or transporter | Only with our written consent | Rental terms, section 7 |
| Racing, rallying, track days, speed testing, drifting, stunts or competitive events | No | Rental terms, section 8 |
| Driving instruction, hire or reward, ride-hailing, taxi or delivery services, subletting | No | Rental terms, section 8 |
| Pushing, towing or propelling another vehicle or trailer | No | Rental terms, section 8 |
| More passengers or load than the vehicle is registered for; dangerous, illegal or corrosive goods | No | Rental terms, section 8 |
| Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that impairs driving | No | Rental terms, section 8 |
| Smoking, or carrying animals | Only where the vehicle record expressly permits it | Rental terms, section 8 |
What happens if you break these rules?
The consequences are written into the terms rather than left to discretion, and they stack.
- Insurance: section 9 lists use in breach of section 7 or 8 among the situations the insurance does not cover, so the included cover no longer applies to that loss and the full value falls on you rather than the excess.
- Recovery and termination: we are entitled to recover the vehicle and end the rental at once.
- Deposit: the pre-authorisation hold on your card can be retained to the extent of our loss, and amounts beyond it can still be recovered.
- Roadside assistance: section 10 makes assistance needed because of misuse chargeable, so a recovery from the sand is billed rather than included.
The accident routine does not change: stop safely, leave the vehicle where it is, call the police on 999 and obtain a police report, then notify us within 24 hours; our accident guide covers each step. Where the incident arose from prohibited use, the report establishes the facts but does not restore the cover. For how each part of the included cover works and the full list of exclusions, see our guide to car rental insurance in Dubai.
What is allowed, then?
Quite a lot. The rule is about surface and purpose, not distance. Within the UAE, on paved public roads, the car is yours to enjoy:
- any emirate, from a day in Abu Dhabi to a longer run up the coast to Ras Al Khaimah
- long drives: 250 km per day is included, calculated over the whole rental, and kilometres beyond the allowance are charged at the per-kilometre rate for the vehicle class in your booking confirmation
- fuel is full to full, so plan to return the car as it was delivered
- Salik toll crossings are billed at the actual amount levied, and traffic fines are passed on at the amount levied plus the administrative fee in your booking confirmation
Delivery and collection are complimentary anywhere in Dubai; delivery to another emirate may carry a fee that your concierge confirms before pickup. Our guide on driving a Dubai rental car to Abu Dhabi covers mileage, tolls and delivery on longer journeys.
How do you plan a desert experience without the rental car?
Treat the desert as a separate activity with its own transport, and keep the ALKA car for the road. Dune driving, beach access and anything on an unpaved track belong to whichever arrangement you make for that part of the trip, booked independently of the rental. The rental terms create no permission for the car to leave paved public roads, however short the detour or however firm the sand looks.
Two practical points follow. Do not assume a route is permitted because it appears on a map or because other vehicles use it; if you are unsure whether a road is a paved public road, ask us before you set off. And think about timing: the minimum rental period is 2 days, a rental day runs 24 hours from handover, and a car returned early remains payable for the period booked unless your booking confirmation states otherwise, so set your dates around the days you will actually be on the road.
What should you tell us when you book?
Most ALKA clients reserve from outside the UAE before they arrive. You share your dates with our concierge, verify your identity remotely and pay online, with the security deposit held as a pre-authorisation on your card rather than a charge; the car is then delivered to the agreed address in Dubai. The online catalogue is temporarily offline while the fleet is updated, so availability is confirmed on request. Our hub guide on renting a luxury car in Dubai before you arrive walks through each step.
When you get in touch, mention the emirates you plan to visit and any plans that sit outside ordinary road driving. We would rather say in advance that a desert or track plan needs separate arrangements than have it surface at handover. Send your dates and itinerary through our contact page or to reservations@alkarentacar.com, and we will confirm availability and the conditions that apply to your rental.
Quick answers
Can I drive an ALKA rental car in the desert in Dubai?
No. Under ALKA's rental terms the vehicle may be driven only on paved public roads within the UAE, and driving on sand, including dunes, beaches, sabkha, salt flats, unpaved tracks or flooded roads is prohibited. Off-road use voids the insurance cover and makes you liable for the full value of any loss or damage.
Can I park a rental car on the beach in Dubai?
No. Beaches are named in the rental terms among the surfaces the car may not be driven on, and the same applies to sand, sabkha and salt flats. Sand brought back in the car can also trigger a cleaning charge where more than normal valeting is needed.
Can I take a rental car to a track day or drift it?
No. Racing, rallying, track days, speed testing, drifting, stunts and any competitive event are prohibited uses under ALKA's rental terms. Insurance does not apply to loss arising from prohibited use, and the rental can be terminated and the vehicle recovered immediately.
What happens if a rental car is damaged off-road?
The insurance cover does not apply to use in breach of the rental terms, so you are liable for the full value of the loss or damage. ALKA may recover the vehicle and end the rental, retain the deposit to the extent of its loss, and recover any further loss from you.
Where am I allowed to drive an ALKA rental car?
On paved public roads anywhere within the United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. The rental includes 250 km per day calculated over the whole rental, with fuel on a full-to-full basis, and cross-border travel is not permitted.
